"When I started working on my album Piano Opus in the summer of 2008, I didn't have the faintest idea what I wanted to compose. This being my thirteenth album, I found it challenging to write something fresh. I listened to many other composers in an effort to spark inspiration. I was surprised by how many albums lose their appeal after the first few songs. So I set out to create a solo piano album that can keep the listener's interest all the way through. I found that one of the main reasons so many other composers' songs sounded similar was that they were written in the same time signatures. Most music is written in 4/4 or 3/4 time. So I set out to write a song in complex time. I chose 5/4 for my first attempt. I didn't realize how difficult it would be to play in 5/4, let alone compose in it. I carried on my experiment for a couple of months until I composed the song titled Wind."

"After the exhausting work of composing in 5/4, I tried to go back to composing in common time (4/4 or 3/4), but I now felt more comfortable writing in complex time. So I continued my complex time adventure and wrote an additional song in 5/4, then three in 7/8 and one in 11/8. I was having so much fun that I often wondered if others would think that I was off my rocker. I hope you think I'm still rocking ;)" ~ Brian Crain (From CD insert)

Yiruma is well-known throughout the world, and his albums are sold all over Asia, as well as the United States and Europe. His most famous pieces are "River Flows in You", "Love Me" which appear on the album "First Love" (2001) and "Kiss the Rain" from the album "From The Yellow Room" (2003). Although he formerly held dual citizenship as a citizen of the United Kingdom and South Korea, in July 2006 he gave up his British citizenship and entered the Republic of Korea Navy to begin his military service, which is compulsory for all male South Koreans. He lived in Osaka, Japan, for 6 years to promote album sales before giving up his dual citizenship.

Pianist George Davidson has assembled another eclectic mix of pop hits, movie themes and show tunes, a classical arrangement, and three original pieces. As on his other albums, Davidson's playing is direct and heartfelt, with fresh interpretations of the old as well as the new. I am partial to his original work, and all three pieces on this album really sing. "La Belle Isle" is dedicated to the people of The Cayman Islands, where Davidson is a regular performer at one of the resorts. This piece is full of sunshine and grace, and is a lovely opening for the album. "Lisa" is a love song, pure and simple in both content and in its message. "Joie de Vivre" is one of Davidson's showier pieces, with lots of trills and runs, and conveys a lighthearted mood with just a touch of melancholy.The title track (the theme from "Titanic") is one of my least-favorite pieces of music in existence, but that is due, at least in part, to the fact that all of my piano students wanted to play it for months, and I had to hear it in all kinds of states many times a day for what seemed like years. But, I digress.... As often as that song has been played the past few years, it is amazing to me that George Davidson was able to give it a fresh and emotionally true arrangement. Davidson's treatment of "Castle On a Cloud" from "Les Miz" is gorgeous - the bittersweet melody comes through elegantly. Yanni's "In the Mirror" was a surprise, and a very pleasant one at that. I like a lot of Yanni's music played solo on piano, and this song was a good choice! It's a shame that no composer credits are given in the liner notes, as I'm sure many listeners would shake their heads and ask themselves where they've heard that song before. Davidson's arrangement of Debussy's "Clair de Lune" is close to the original, making me wonder why he changed sections - whether it was to make it more palatable for his audiences or simply to suit himself. It's a lovely arrangement, but the piano teacher in me takes small umbrage at "messing with the classics" when the pianist's skills are up to the original, as Davidson's clearly are.

This is another excellent solo piano collection from George Davidson, and I highly recommend it to those who like classy piano interpretations of a variety of popular songs and melodies. Keep the originals, coming, too, George!

The first time we heard George Davidson's piano was while the TV set at the Westin in Grand Cayman was turned to the hotel's info channel. The background music that was playing was George's rendition of "Somewhere in Time", which is the first selection on this beautiful album. This first cut, which is the theme song from the Christopher Reeve movie of the same title, sets the tone for this, his first album, as well as the rest of George Davidson's music. Prior to hearing Davidson play the piano, I was honestly not a piano lover. George changed my mind completely! He is able to somehow set a mood with his music unlike anything I have heard before. Although you've no doubt heard the melodies on this album before, George lets you hear them from an entirely different perspective. Adjectives such as "relaxing, romantic, soothing" come to mind when I try to describe George Davidson's music to others. Try listening to this album with a glass of wine and a candle burning. I guarantee your mood will improve instantly!

New age pianists split performance duties down the center on this holiday album. Each chose to perform an extended variation/improvisation, plus a shorter song — only four tracks in all. Jones performs an eleven-and-a-half minute variation on "Good King Wenceslas" and the radiant "Carol of the Bells." The "Wenceslas" variations are not the typical jolly-good version you might hear from carolers. Jones opens up the vistas of passages giving a sense of warmth. Then he will flit the melody like the wind swirling snowflakes. At these moments, you might forget about the tune, but of course the warmth of the noble melody is repeated. "Carol of the Bells" peals out the theme immediately, and Jones bases the variations on rhythmic patterns rather than the melody; he reinvites the melody in a somber tone. David Lanz's "What Child is This" is delicate and reverential. The album ends with a dynamic 12-minute variation on the famous theme from Pachelbel's "Canon in D Major." Because of the abstractions in the variations, this album will be suitable for those occasions where you want suggestions of Christmas, but don't want to go overboard.
